Listening to the Italian Coast Guard Commandant Gregorio De Falco light into Captain Francesco Schettino of the ill-fated Costa Concordia reveals a spectacular verbal ass beating.
My guess is that the ship will be refloated, refitted, renamed, and back on the high seas within two years. Schettino is lucky that this happened so close to shore in shallow waters or that boat would be in a watery grave with a lot more dead bodies.
Having been on many cruises, the sight of this huge modern ship resting on its side continues to amaze me.
My guess is that he foresaw that possibility and played it safe in a lifeboat.

The Captain is now claiming he "tripped and fell" into the lifeboat. Guess he didn't regain his balance until reaching dry land.

What did this guy command before he got aboard this vessel?
A Sunfish? A jet ski?

No doubt the ship will be restored to service. It still amazes me that after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, all but three of the ships damaged at Pearl Harbor were refloated and returned to service during the War. And it was done during wartime.

I doubt that Schettino will be returned to service.

I'll bet all those passengers are sorry that they didn't get the dinner with the captain affair that all cruise lines hold on every trip.
The truth be told, most modern cruise ships run on autopilot most of the time. The computer navigation systems on those ships are amazing. Maybe Schettino should have let HAL run the thing.

"Maybe Schettino should have let HAL run the thing."
Maybe Schettino should have taken the advice radioed to him pre-crash.
Knowing how the Italian mindset is regarding these things, I'll bet he faces criminal prosecution, in addition to all the civil action that's going to materialize against him.

Maybe Skipper should have gotten the Captain's job.

Just as Schettino disgraces proud Italians, De Falco redeems them.

Would it be accurate to say that the good captain was leading from behind?
