Let's face it, Perdue quit because governing is hard and she wasn't up to the task. This was a substance-less term because of a substance-less governor.
Perdue will be a footnote as the first female governor of North Carolina, but aside from that, her term is going to be forgettable because it WAS the most forgettable and meaningless administration in modern North Carolina history.
UPDATE TO MY COMMENT BELOW:
Heath Shuler is leaning towards running. He would be the most competitive candidate the Democrats could front. This is still Pat McCrory's race to lose though.
Wasn't right she had to work with the enemy to pass or have them slap down her legislation.
Washington's hand is in her not running in 2012. She was probably leaning that way, Obama's requirement to keep NC in 2012 shoved her over the cliff. McCrory was a shoe-in if she ran again. Imagine he's saying to himself, gosh darn it Bev, now I gotta work for it.

The Democrats have nobody to replace her. Heath Shuler maybe, but I don't think he's running. Their ranks are remarkably thin at the state level.

Heath Shuler would be a tough competitor, if he chose to run. Although, his appeal in the party might be limited in the eastern part of the state. He may aso be too moderate to appeal to Democrats in 2012. He would not be very compatible with Obama, as one of the few remaining Blue Dogs from Rham's 2008 project.

Moderate Democrats have proven they can win in North Carolina. Shuler would appeal to Democrats for that reason alone.

Bowles?

There's going to be lots of competition for the Democrat nomination for governor. The Obamanation may end up as a major influence in the selection, and I'm not sure how well Schuler rates with them.

Bowles can't win and I don't believe he has any interest in running. It's going to take a more modern Democrat and North Carolina doesn't have many at the moment with the exception of Shuler and a few others. The rest are washed up or liberal dinosaurs who have no chance in a statewide race.

Blue Dog Democrats are not in vogue these days. Conservative voters have discovered that a vote for a Blue Dog is just a vote for Obama's policies. It was the Blue Dogs that got us Obamacare. That is why voters cleaned house in 2010. If you want a conservative, you do not vote for a Democrat. Much as I like Shuler, I could not vote for him. If he is elected, he gets Democrats back in the game, and they will not be conservative policy makers, once in office. Face it, the Dem party has moved so far left that a true liberal looks moderate, almost conservative.

Remember, it was John Edwards that was selected to run for senator several years ago, as the Dems needed a candidate that appeared to be conservative. And, we know how that turned out.

Shuler has said that he is not a candidate. It will be hard for a Democrat to organize a winning ampaign at this late date, given the GOP will have a candidate with one campaign experience and exposure. Also, a candidate tat probably should ave won in 2008 anyway.

"Bowles can't win and I don't believe he has any interest in running."
True as that probably is, it seems like others are trying to create that interest in and for him.

And now Shuler's giving up, too.
Best line so far about Shuler's announcement:
"Shuler’s retirement in this strong Republican seat is another turnover to end his second career in Washington"

I keep wondering if Perdue has a felony to defend in her near future...

"I keep wondering if Perdue has a felony to defend in her near future."
I think it's more to do with Powers That Be telling her she's "no longer needed. Thanks, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out".

There are rumors going around that Perdue may be indicted. Valid possibility.
Bob Etheridge announced today. If he is the competition, McCrory can start measuring for drapes in Raleigh.
