So Rich was approached by person "A". What conversations did Person "A" have with with other Republicans, particularly those who hold office within the party organization, before Person "A" approached rich Brenner.

For context, let's also talk about the relationship between Guilford GOP party officials and C4GC.

Ken Hill

Trying to look at the much larger picture, the problem with politics Worldwide is corruption, especially in Africa. One of the reasons for the historical success of the USA has been more integrity in politics. It is an absolute necessity at every level. If we choose corrupt people, even locally, we are heading for the problems of Africa and Asia.

Spag

"approached" isn't the right word. Person A called Brenner because Person A thought Brenner might have known Riddlgeberger because of a cross reference in Riddleberger's file with WGHP.

This whole idea that people who caught wind that there was something in Riddleberger's past must either stick their head in the sand and ignore it or must be part of some conspiracy is ridiculous. Person A could have just as easily been me or anyone else who heard the rumors and decided to dig deeper.

Sam: Can you put in plain English why Yon would withdraw? She has always seemed like a rational leader who would make a good chair.

Spag

Jeff, I will write more about it tomorrow. It doesn't involve any kind of "dirt" on Yon or any linkage whatsoever to involvement in the Riddleberger story.

Ken, this country was made possible by genocide and slavery. You don't need to look to Africa and Asia.

You've been had.

This whole thing stinks, and could have been avoided if certain people had not had so stupid and self serving about C4GC and Jeff Hyde.

Brandon Burgess

I, for one, am looking forward to bubba's enlightening blogpost on this subject.

Bubba, I have yet to see your suggestions on what should've happened. What is your proposed solution or what would have done? And don't look at Joe's paper for the answer. You two have been most unreasonable in all of this and have made almost no case for your positions.

Ched H

Correction* what would your response have been one discovering the information about riddleberger?

What Bubber Knows

Bubba don't know nothing. He sits at home. He doesn't even go out of the house. That's why he only makes one phrase comments because he don't know anything.

He only knows how to hint at threats because he thinks it is intimidating.

It's like a 15 year old dog who is left with nothing but a weakening bark to make himself relevant.

Spag

There is some "self-serving" going on, but you have it wrong as to where it's coming from and who is doing it.

I don't ever expect you or Joe to complain about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, John Edwards, or Bill Ayers ever again. You are correct that the whole thing could have been avoided if someone had the common sense to say that a convicted sex offender had no business taking on such a prominent role in a political movement. The general public will not care if the people at Lawndale think he has been redeemed. This is politics and that simply doesn't matter.

The idea that some people with common sense and a little bit of political savvy concluded that this was an issue of concern that should be addressed is not some conspiracy against Hyde. That doesn't even make sense because Hyde isn't Riddleberger.

Neither of you could look me in the eye and tell me that if this involved a Democrat you wouldn't be having a field day attacking them, especially on the issue of morality. That absolutely blatant double standard is quite disappointing. Barack Obama may have thought that Bill Ayers was a good guy personally, too, but in the world of politics it doesn't matter what you think personally in such matters.

Well said. Very well said. I look forward to the information on Theresa yon tomorrow. That is unfortunate news.

bubba

"Bubba, I have yet to see your suggestions on what should've happened."

Wright and Wilkins should have kept their mouthes shut. Their irresponsible actions, and (at least in the case of Wilkins) barely disguised hostility to C4GC is well documented. They made a bad situation worse, and it deteriorates by the minute

This is the culmination of their disastrous management of the Guilford County Republican Party.

"There is some "self-serving" going on, but you have it wrong as to where it's coming from and who is doing it."

This, from a guy who complained about Linda Shaw, and the situation that allows her to stay in a position of power and influence?

Beau

Ken, this country was made possible by genocide and slavery. You don't need to look to Africa and Asia.

Made possible by slavery, I don't think so, this country was evolving and would have continued to evolve without slavery. Slavery, as horrible as it is, no man should be put into bondage, is not something invented in this country, I suspect many Chief's in Africa dealt in slavery prior to slavery coming to this country. What genocide, I must have missed that one in American History. Beau

"Correction* what would your response have been one discovering the information about riddleberger?"

The same as most people who have known it for some time: not make a political issue out of it, and attempt to take advantage for political gain.

WHY did the information acted upon when Hyde became a candidate for GOP Chair, and not when he was a candidate for state office last year?

I don't buy Spagnola's glossover account about Person "A". The whole scenario stinks of rotting political agenda, and an attempt to keep "business as usual" intact within the Guilford County GOP.

And to the smartasses who are so concerned about my activity, come find me tomorrow night, and we will discuss it in a most public way.

What Bubber Knows

I'll be the bubless. How would you like to start the discussion.

bubba

"I'll be the bubless. How would you like to start the discussion."

It's up to you, coward. That's how I'll address you when you make yourself known.

bubba

Here's a question for Spagnola: did you contact Btrenner to get his permission after reading Joe Guarino's post about the Coliseum yesterday afternoon?

Joe Guarino

Sam, just an open question. What is your take on who would have won tomorrow night had Theresa Yon not withdrawn from the race?

There was an interesting but unattributed statement in the News and Record this AM:

"Some Republican officials say they worry that... the activist style of (Hyde's) group would be bad for the county GOP."

This further corroborates my previous contention that this whole spat reflects in part tension between conservative and more moderate elements within the party; different methods employed by the two groups; and ultimately, IMHO, cultural bigotry. There has been a lot more going on than just the reaction of some people to the old conviction. That was the fuel that fed the fire, but you cannot understand the whole story without further context.

I do not think it was at all inevitable that Brenner and Person A, and whoever else might have been involved, had to handle this in the manner they did. Riddleberger was not a candidate for high party office or elective office.

While I appreciate your efforts to document this matter, Sam, I think, as Bubba suggests, that a portion of this story has been missed. I am not sure to what you are referring when you state there were "possible dirty tricks", but I will certainly stay tuned.

I want to tell you some things about Jeff Hyde. During his senatorial campaign last year, he told me a number of people approached him with various types of dirt alleged regarding his opponent. He refused to pursue these because he did not want that type of campaign. And when this whole mess started a couple of weeks ago, he told me specifically he did not feel Theresa was at fault.
